Abstract

Centrifugal compressors have a long history of development, especially in aviation industry and power engineering. The main advantage compared to positive displacement units is in the availability of high flow rates with decent compression ratios. Moreover, the turbo-compressor operate without an oil, which gives a high flexibility on refrigerant selection and temperature range. This paper aims to bring an overview on advancement in turo-compressor technology in last decades and present where the turbo-compressor could bring an advantage compared to positive displacement technology. An effective centrifugal compressor for a refrigeration would require the ability to operate on a wide range of pressure ratios and mass flows. The main limit for that are generally the load capacity of bearing system and choke limitation and surge protection. These limits could be reduced by clever design of an impleller. Application of turbo-compressor technology in refrigeration industry is presented in this paper as well, based on literature research.
